Why do so many people live in London?

I don't mean to insult anyone because according to 5 million+ people, it is their home. But when I see London, it is just so expensive, look at the housing market there. Crime there is so much higher than anywhere else in the UK, so is immigration, I use to live in Newham when I was a toddler, my parents joked our family were the only white English family in London.

But when I think about, I am clearly missing something about London considering 8 million people live there. My parents left saying that crime and living cost in London was just to high.

It's supply and demand. if nobody wanted to live in London, housing would be cheap.Crime doesn't affect most Londoners. London has attracted immigrants since the Middle Ages.

Because that's where the best paying jobs are. I was making £65k in London and the same job in Nottingham was paying £37k. Plus London is a much better city in terms of culture, restaurants, art, etc

Because London is the place to be :)

I'm born and raised in London and I wouldn't mind living outside of London, but because my home is in London, I would prefer to work in London as it would be ideal financially.

Immigration makes London more interesting culturally and restaurant wise. Because it is the capital city and indeed a world city, it is the best place in the U.K. for employment, the Arts and Music, public transport and a host of other of life's facets. Crime is not particularly high compared to other capital cities and other urban areas in the U.K.

Where the jobs are..Where we all gravitate..I did, having been brought up and educated in Wales & Scotland......LEFT and settled in Manchester, with no regrets, but can hold you back in some careers if do so.....SAD you let yourself down with the mention of race here....Sorry, but we are NOT all lilly white....I taught for a while, in a very multicultural area of London, and I considered all the kids ENGLISH, whatever their colour or creed....I was the "foreigner" with a funny accent.....
