I can understand why you may perceive the English holding contempt for the Scottish, perhaps that representation is true of a number of English people, but I don t believe that all English people are so prejudiced against them. To assume so, I think, would be wrong.
But it s pretty double-sided. Legendarily, the Scots and the English have equal hatred for one another. The answer for this relies in the countries history, and how often one has stabbed the back of the other. If you feel that the Scots and the English don t see eye to eye now, you don t know the half of what it was like so many hundreds of years ago.
The chief reason, I think, all comes down to a man named William Wallace. Most people know of him from the biopic Braveheart. In 1297 he triumphantly defeated the English in a chaotic Civil War which broke out chiefly because of the Scottish s entitlement to independence which the English refused them. Legend describes him as a ruthless warrior, the very epitome of a great Scotsman. He was The Guardian of Scotland, so admired was he in his homeland. Nevertheless, the English eventually captured him after being betrayed by one of his own men to the delight of King Edward. He was tried for treason and atrocities against civilians during the war, "sparing neither sex nor age, monk nor nun". He responded to the treason charge, "I could not be a traitor to Edward, for I was never his subject". He was punished by being hanged, drawn and quartered, alongside a number of other torturous monstrosities that are unthinkable in today s age.
I believe that his death is almost symbolic of the killing of Scottish belief and patriotism - everything they stood and still stand for. And who caused it? The English, that s who. The English tried to defeat Scottish tradition, and really only succeeded in forging a resentment of one another. I think really some Scots can t forgive the English for what they have done to them throughout history, and still mistrust them - I believe that in turn the only valid reason for the English looking down on the Scots is because of their wanting to return the feeling that they get from them.
A. They don't
B. You are plainly not a native English speaker, so actually the relationship beetween England and Scotland is None of Your D*mn Business.
C. Now get lost. And don't come back.
We don't,
But we are fed up with their demands, they had a vote for independence(which is more than we were offered)
They voted to stay,so now need to work with the rest of us,not want special treatment
Do not believe they do..I am Welsh and live now in England. Have lived in Scotland too. WHY try and stir it between neighbours who ARE ALL British...? Many of us have family ties all over the UK.
Why do you keep asking why people look down on other people? What makes you think they even do? Or are you simply trying to cause arguments and division?
Because Scotland shows such stupidly in who they vote for.
We don't look down on anyone.
Same reasons as the rest of us do.
They don't, it is just people like you who like to stir
