Then, in 1941, Nazi Germany was more powerful USSR, but our grandfathers could contain the onslaught cost of many losses. It's reason to teach children what is war and how need to protect Motherland, it's reason to remind veterans what is war and how easy come to it, but how hardly finish it. It's day of Day of Remembrance for the enormous victims.
If all that isn't around, probably, they hadn't in the same situation or ask their conscience.
Russia lost ALOT more men during WW2 then the rest of the allied countries. America lost around 400,000 vs around 10 million for the USSR. I'm guessing the extreme sacrifice led to making it a national holiday.
America and the European nations decided that there is no losers in world wars. So the relationship between countries would stay unharmed and hate wouldn't arise. Russia doesn't care about about that agreement, because they feel like punishment should be implied for each war. So Russia celebrates their victory.
Well if the U.S was invaded and we lost millions of civilians and the invaders were throwing babies into fires and death squads were shooting civilians without mercy, and we fought back and drove them out, we would celebrate that victory too. The USSR deserves to celebrate their victory over the Nazi invaders, that doesn't mean I condone their crimes or their mass rapes against German women or their treatment of conquered subjects.
Huge losses on Russia but the higher losses than soviets's count
It would be virtually impossible to count all these bodies.
American troops's only suffering 407k while soviet union suffered about millions.
In my opinion Stalin was moron to waste his officer corps.
The German surrender document was signed very late on 8 May which, due to time differences, was the 9 May Moscow time. So while most of Europe celebrate the end of WWII on 8 May - the date the document was signed there, the Russians celebrate on 9 May.
Because of the enormous losses they suffered in that war. Of course Stalin's killing off his officer corp before the war started and later his
waste of troops in human wave attacks had something to do with it. That and the practice of stationing troops behind the attackers whose job it was to shoot anyone who tried to retreat helped bring up the count.
Because a third of the country got burnt into ashes and 25 mln people died. For Russians and Belarussians that was a war for survival. That's why.
Why do all the war monuments face West? To say we won to Germany and the West.
