" We Americans think Russian are really Nice people " - yes, we see it in speeches of your government, in your movies, in comments for articles on Russia etc... every day. You personally might not have anything against Russia or any other country, but many of your compatriots do not share this point of view. And share of these people is no less than share of Russians, who do not like USA. The difference is you know nothing about us, we know more about you (due to US movies, TV programs, music etc...).
As for why certain countries are not allies, the main reason is competition (for markets, potential income, political influence, power, etc...)
You don't ask why Samsung and Apple are not allies. In case of Russia and USA logic is exactly the same. Money and power are limited within the Earth, but greed and spirit of competition are endless.
As Max Igan said: they want polarized energy, they want our fear. Because it's the easiest way to control the population of any country.

Both nations are pitted against each other. I probably spend as much time on "reeducating" my americanophobic compatriots as I do on "reeducating" russophobic Americans and Westerners in general. Govts, lorded over by banksters, are not allies, simple mortals always have choice; those commoners who think that "my govt = me" are brainwashed fools. Nobody can and has the right to force you think and act against your free will, that's why you can find representatives of one ethnic group/nation on different sides of the same war, such as the one in ex-Ukraine for instance.
Love people who live in different countries? - fine, then stop identifying yourself with a label written/printed in a piece of paper that is called "birth certificate" (also with your govt and banking "elite" that doesn't give a f*ck about you). Humans are not commodities and don't have to tune their lives in accordance with some imposed pseudo-standards and labels.
Please, no one from NATO countries do not answer, including the gangster government in Ukraine since you are bought and paid for by the U.S.
The answer is they are not enemies, they are business competitors and the U.S. has used its economic power to hurt Russian economy and business for their own selfish reasons. I hope Russia does not use the U.S. dollar any more. The U.S. and European powers are ruining the world.
