"so why do people care about their personal lives? I don't understand the following of celebrities either." Neither do I, I couldn't careless what they are doing, saying or where they are/have been, some people like to watch others live their lives, while some prefer to get on an live their own lives
People in the UK wonder why the flag is such a big deal in the US.
Tradition, the lack of a written constitution and the fact that the UK is a constitutional monarchy - so the King or Queen is head of state.
The press love this stuff because the Royals sell newspapers.
Although I'm a Royalist, I only have a passing interest in the lives of the Royals. However, I'm an exception. It sells newspapers because so many people are interested. Not just in UK but all over the world.
If a Royal goes on an official tour, it's a great successs and gives us a good image. Nobody cares about our sleazy politicians.
This is a good question. The answer is not easy to find because the monarchy no longer have much political power. It is connected with many things: nostalgia, a search for national identity, Cinderella fairy tales. It is said that everyone in Britain has had a nightdream concerning the Queen.
Apart from the media who somehow keeps assuming that brits care (when they don't) and morons who see it as being "patriotic", nobody really cares for the royal family. I couldn't possibly give a **** about the new princess
Same reason the Kardashians are a big deal. People love something to talk about.
I give the Royal family and celebrities every bit as much thought as they give me.
Because they're Royal.
It's a dirty job, but somebody's gotta do it.
To many of us they are NOT..www.republic.org.uk
