Erdogan is one of the top-notch politician in the world today. We are talking about a person who used to sell mail stickers as a boy and now he is the president of his country.
Erdogan has conservative social policies, but liberal economic policies. Under his 11 year rule, Turkey GDP has increased by 400%. I know his AKP party is crumbling and Abdullah Gum will not be signed as PM soon, because of disagreement with Erdogan and Gum. He will probably appoint Ahmet Davutoglu as PM, because he is just a yes men to Erdogan, who did not win enough votes to secure enough seats in parliament, for him to transform the Turkish constitution so he could give the President more executive powers, then just the ceremonial position the President has today. He can attain support from liberals because of his economic policies and from conservatives for his social policies . He is not very effective many people among the AKP disagree with him and he has handled Turkey's foreign policy disastrously.

We hate him because: He wants to build a totalitarian regime which has great resemblance to the one founded by Stalin. He has no respect to rule of law and separation of powers and thus democracy. He has no other option than following this totalitarian line as otherwise he'll be severely prosecuted for the crimes he committed that include even treason. He's a deeply racist person who wants to classify people all according to their ethnic backgrounds and religions they belong. He leads the country to an eventual civil war. People are arbitrarily promoted or sacked depending on their loyalty or disloyalty to his party. As a result very incompetent people are promoted and this leads to disasters and mistrust in society. I hope I could sum all reasons up.

He wants a strong, rich, modern and free Turkey in peace with its history, culture and traditions.
So, they aren't secular in the same sense one would think in the West, they hate Muslims and Islam. They would say they're Muslim, if you ask them, but wouldn't mind even insulting Muslim people outright. They have no idea as to what real secularism mean. It was Erdo?an who praised secularism in Egypt when Morsi was in the Office before the coup, becuase Erdo?an knows secularism doesn't mean the oppression or persecution of believers.
Erdo?an have brought the real secularism in Turkey. Erdo?an have brought more freedom and human rights to Turkey. The so-called secularists who exploited and enjoyed all the benefits of the State, while oppressing the majority. Now, they have no priviledge, they used to have, thanks to Erdo?an. That's why they hate Erdo?an.
It is somewhat like what happened in Venezuela. Venezuelans overwhelmingly believe, and they are right to do so, that their country's economic and political elites have robbed them of their fair share of national wealth for decades. It was the same in Turkey. There were many army officials who earned about 2-3k monthly, but whose all children studied abroad in prestigious universities and when these military officials retired from their positions, they immediately become directors of some company, whereas they know nothing about running a company or private sector.
