The pro-independence dissidents thought they could have their own Maidan protest but it did not work out. And most residents of the east are not separatists. They wanted autonomy or just local control.
What has destabilized Ukraine is the incompetent ruthless barbarians in Kiev, who are making their economy worse than it was. Russia is concerned with stability, and law and order and their own security at their border. The U.S. told them in the 1990s they would not expand NATO but they have.
2 sides to every story, try watching or reading news broadcast by US,the British, The Russians, The Ukrainians. All are totally different.
So there is no definite answer but the 2 general views are:
Russians are protecting human rights & their own people
VS
Russians are destabilizing Ukraine for their own economic benefit
Russia is objecting to the coup by the west that deposed the democratically elected pro Russian Ukrainian president and are supporting the Russian speaking citizens in their fight for their country's survival, and not for it to become another Iraq or Afghanistan, due to western meddling for the west's own selfish ends.
Because these revolutionaries, they help, fight for becoming a part of Russia!
If, by revolutioners, you mean separatists, or so called rebels, then, to prevent Maidan like scenario in Russia.
