Former NSA "defector" Edward Snowden had the moral rectitude and audacity to exhibit (bring to light) the unscrupulous *surveillance* activities being perpetrated upon the American public by this pervasive Proto-Orwellian government.

Generally, Snow is either venerated as 'virtuous' defender of the US Constitution or conversely, he's perceived as a sort of treacherous rapscallion. I harbor mixed views, but more on the commendatory side. It worth noting/indicating however that this phenomenon should not be perceived with callow-like bewilderment, the inmates have been running the asylum for quite a time now....
Well, he seriously didn't like what NSA is doing, and wanted to get out of there and say something. He couldn't say anything in US, they would have long killed him for such a treason. A car accident maybe.
There are only 2 countries on Earth that US can't push around: Russia and China. China has extradition, Russia doesn't. So Russia was the only country that is safe for him to go to.

I'm Not defending what Putin has done to Ukraine, but Russia's government is not as bad as US makes it sound. And US isn't as nice as it shows on Hollywood movies.
