There is a degree of unification since EU imposes some similar laws and many countries use the same currency . Is not impossible but it would be hard to do and it will not happen soon. First at the moment there isn't a will to unify Europe in one country , there isn't even a desire to unify EU in a country. There are huge differences between countries and not only from West to East . For example I remember reading an article about how slapping your kid to discipline it is accepted in France . In a nordic country that is unacceptable. Countries also have a long history and nations still fight over things that happened 1000 years ago. Time can solve a lot of problems so who knows maybe 100 years from now ............. It all depends on enough people wanting this to happen.
I think Europe will evolve into one big country, maybe not all of Europe but most of what is now the EU.
Who would have thought 50 or even 25 years ago that today we can travel freely (you have to have your passport or ID card but you do not need to show it) from Estonia to Portugal and from Iceland to Greece.
In some years there will be a new generation of politicians who have come into power after the end of the communist era.
I do expect to be surprised one day by finding that Europe has taken a next step on the way of becoming one country.
Maybe I will not see the unified Europe but I am sure that it will come.

However, if you are thinking that there will be a United States of Europe - no, that's never going to happen. Each country is far too fond of its own autonomy for that to happen.
