In the latest census in 2011, out of all population who answered the question about their religion, 20,640 said they were Muslims.

Bear in mind that more than 740,000 didn't answered that specific question, so they might be a little more.

In 2004, estimatives were between to 30-35 thousand and in a 2011 news report estimate more than 40,000, which considering those who didn't answered that question can be legitimate figures.

Numbers presented by Rachele are from wikipedia and they are completely outdated since they're from the 1991 census.

And they are not all in Lisbon, though the region itself has the largest slice, with about 69% (14,202). In the North of the country there are 2,263, in the center 1,611, in the Alentejo 552, in the Algarve 136 and in the Islands 303. Official census numbers, of course.

There are mosques in Lisbon, Oporto and Coimbra and several other worship sites in other places all over the country. They are well integrated because the majority is from the former Portuguese colonies. But this is an open community and inter-religious conversations are quite common.

They are also an active part of the society, of course. Some of them are actually quite famous, for instance, one former CEO of an important company was considered the highest paid in Portugal for some recent years. The Imam of the central mosque of Lisbon is also very respected and his often invited to speak on tv and for debates in universities and in the mosque itself. Another exemple is a family of muslims that runs a quite famous clothes brand in Portugal.

Portugal has a Muslim population of around 50,000. This is 0.5% of the total Portuguese population.

Very few. All in Lisbon. Is a quiet colony. Non disturbing and respectful of our culture. They are integrated and only very few women and girls use the veil. Hardly find a burka coz is not accepted anywhere. Women can use a burka in the streets but not allowed to get inside shops or any public buildings.

There is a big mosque in Lisbon. They are very liberal and adapted to our culture.

Not at all, there is 9,134 Muslims in Portugal, about 0.1% of the total Portuguese population.

No come to Britain if you want to meet Moslems. My lady friends family and the National Treasures who run our curry houses.

I find it revealing that all your answerers are respectful enough to capitalize the word "Muslim" or its variants whereas you are not. What kind of Muslim does that make you?
