If you want to go slightly off the beaten track, to a place that is very pittoresque, full of history, relatively clean, not yet ruined by mass tourism but yet modern enough for tourists to visit, then Croatia is just for you!
The high touristic season in the summertime obviously increases the prices there, but it should still be affordable. I personally can recommend Dubrovnik area as I visited there in summer 2012, but Split, Makarska riviera area and e.g. Brac, Vis and Hvar are all worth for visiting as well! I am already harbouring my dreams of visiting Split in the future...
I think it's way too crowded and over priced for what they offer. Good beaches are jammed pack with people, the rest are rocky or concrete and they're still very crowded. Nut my cup of tea.
