A lot of people in Greece speak English. They learn it at school since primary school so yeah people in Athens do understand English.
You will be surprised how many people speak English in Greece and Athens in general. You will have no problem at all.
The vast majority of people in Athens, especially those younger than 30, speak adequate English. You will have no problem communicating, don't worry.
A LOT of English spoken as everywhere in Europe..Is the language a Swedish person talks to a Greek in etc etc ...NOT just natives...
English is widely spoken in all Greece - in fact it is the most popular second language of the Greeks.
All schoolchildren in Greece start learning English in the third grade, most Greeks under 40 will know English.
