Britain was the first to introduce Free Speech & Freedom of the Press. Good that racial comments are a crime or any other slander. You can criticize the monarchy, but you can't criticize the Queen personally. You can criticize immigration policy, but not single out an individual immigrant.
That is called civilized responsible freedoms for all.
I live in the US and for sure they have freedom to bombard you with advertizing day and night for sales, propaganda, religion, anything to destroy quality of life all in the name of free speech.
It's all BS and the form of government is powerless to stop it. Nearly all the politicians are bought by corporations. No such thing as democracy, they just talk about it a lot, it's an ideal they don't have. Do you believe for one minute that any State in the US could vote for independence, like Scotland just has.
As with the rest of the world you're blindsided by US propaganda if you think people are free here.
Experience one brush with the police and you would think you were in NAZI Germany. I kid you not.
Reporters Without Borders’ annual Freedom Index report ranked the United States 46th in the world regarding freedom of information, a drop of 13 spots from 2012.
Freedom House, an independent watchdog organization, ranked the United States 30th out of 197 countries in terms of press freedom.[19] The report lauded the constitutional protections afforded American journalists, but criticized authorities for placing undue limits on investigative reporting in the name of national security.
Not compared to the US no. The most significant type of oppression the British live under is the lack of free speech. There are several crimes in the UK that only require you to say something to be charged and convicted of a crime - example, calling someone a racial slur.
On the other hand their criminal sentences are a joke, so even if you are convicted of something the punishment is usually trivial.
Compared to many countries the UK has a great deal of freedom.
This is evidenced by the recent General Election in which many millions of people exercised their right to vote as they pleased. Of course the result was not to everybody's liking but that is democracy for you.
To say that most peoples' vocabulary and thoughts are under the influence of the mainstream soundbite culture is to insult the intelligence of those very people.
The media includes the BBC which could hardly be described as right wing and is almost daily having to defend itself against accusations of left wing bias.
Having been brought up on what, at the time, was regarded as one of the roughest council estates in the country, I was able to successfully avail myself of what education was on offer, go to grammar school, college and, after acquiring a full-time job, spend 12 years studying part-time to better myself. I mention all this as an example of the freedom of action that was available to me and is available to a very high percentage of the population.
Whether they choose to exercise that freedom is up to them.
EDIT for "Alex G"
There are very many millions of British people who voted Conservative and are very happy with the election result. The elections are not controlled by "billionaire elites" and they have no influence at all on the vote count. If you believe this to be the case, produce evidence and report the matter to the police. Something open to everyone in a free society.
Why don't you tree looking up the freedom in the world thing online, from the CIA. Maybe that can tell you, because telling you all of that would be a little complicated for me
Freedom to do what? The question doesn't make any sense by itself.
Not with a Tory government
In theory yes but it is a very controlled country with poor education for most. Most peoples' vocabulary and thoughts are under the influence of the mainstream soundbite culture of the mostly right wing politicians and even more right wing media, encouraging dislike of immigrants, education and good organic food and creating a very materialistic, selfish culture distancing itself from thought, analysis and contact with nature. And the 7 thumbs down so far demonstrate the complete lack of awareness of people that their minds have been totally captured by propagandists. Time to read 1984 by George Orwell
No - every single citizen is being held in slavery
No. we have a man behind us with a gun, pointing at our head watching as we type.
YES thanks & ONE DAY even BETTER without the TORIES...FREE to despise the USA and all it claims to stand for..FREE there? LOL..Sure not if young and BLACK...Such questions often posted by Americans who have never travelled to know any better....
