The Russian Federation has 21 republics. Also, all of the former Soviet republics are independent and most of them are funded by the U.S. and NATO. If they were still the USSR they would not have the problem of economic sanctions against them and they had a more powerful military. There is no more KGB. It was replaced by the FSB. The U.S. uses the Russian space shuttle to get to the ISS.
The Russian Federation is very much like the old Soviet Union in it's regional policies, thugish (for that matter, so where the Tsars). However, the Russian Federation allows private ownership (despite occasional 'state' seizures, which actually are to benefit the select rich) and it has much freer trade. Like the old Soviet Union, Russia is run by the modern equivalent of Soviet Union Commissars, but with elections which have varying degrees or authenticity. Unlike the Old Soviet Union, the Commissars are chosen by their wealth in addition to their friends.
After Soviet Union? Hey, man, Soviet Union is already history, there ended the dashing 90-s and begin restoring 00-s. Do you belief in red alert? Then look to Nothern Korea, but don't forget rotate the globe 180 ° and wear glasses.
Still not a high quality of life. Just think that the life expectancy in Russia is just 68 years, lower than any developed country, similar to developing or even third world countries...
For most people life is still though however now they have more freedom and they want Russia to become a superpower again however this will happen in a decade or two.
Russia is reborn as a nation,Russians have some freedoms, but there is immigration problem in Russia.
Stop asking man. They are a lot richer though there are the poor, the crazy years are over, murder rates have gone down. Not so many street children anymore.
smaller (size reduced after former Soveit Republics gained Independence)
pretty decent life in big cities
