Macedonia is a province in Greece , while Makedonja is a former province of Yugoslavia .

In Antiquity the country / area called Macedonia included a lot of both of those present day geographical areas , but the people there were Greek speaking Greeks .

Nowadays the Greek Macedonia is inhabited nearly totally by Greek-speaking Greeks , while Makedonja is inhabited by 75% Bulgarian speaking Slavs , 20% Albanian speaking Albanians and 5% whom only God can sort out .

This whole area of the Balkans has had a very lively and complex time for thousands of years in which the inhabitants have been stormtossed in the gales of history sweeping through , and the names given to various places and areas are still capable of arousing homicidal tribal aggression even today .

Υes, Macedonia is a province in North Greece

The northern part of Greece is named Macedonia.

Yugoslavia had a Republic (province) named Macedonia, which borders on the Greek Macedonia. That country today is known as FYROM (Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia).

The Communist government of Yugoslavia re-named the area Republic of Macedonia to imply a claim on the northern part of Greece. The Communists also tried to take Greece in the 1946-1949 Greek civil war.

Greece hates that FYROM has "Macedonia" in its name and road signs inside Greece pointing north simply say "To Yugoslavia".

Macedonia is a very large part of the Balkans that is currently part of 3 countries. Greece , Bulgaria and FYROM have parts of that geographical area but FYROM wants to clain exclusivity of the word in lack of historical background.

They go to many extremes trying to convince the World Community that they are the sole descendants of Alexander the Great, a fact which does not hold, since they appeared in the region many centuries after the Macedonians of Alexander's era who were Greek educated and of Greek mentality.
