The Turkish society is a bit ambivalent about homosexuality. On one hand it's legal (has been for well over a hundred years), and there are some well-known gays in the public arena, so there is some acceptance of the concept. On the other hand same-sex rights are not well protected and there is some discrimination, possibly even more under the current conservative regime.
See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LGBT_rights...
Turkey is not only Ankara and Istanbul and although there must be gays in both cities, there are other cities and towns that do not share the same liberal mentality as them. Surely too, there are gays all over but they will not openly admitting it because it is not acceptable to their Society and their mentality.
Not long ago a TV reporter or persona lost her job because she was wearing a dress that was a bit more revealing than it should, while, in contrast, the now president's wife is covered from head to toe.in the clasical attire of a faithful Muslim. That should give you an idea.
There are LGBT all over but no laws exist yet in Turkey that protect LGBT people from discrimination.
On the other hand, Turkey is the first Muslim-majority country in which a gay pride parade was held. This photo is from LGBT pride parade in Turkey.
I don't know about "acceptable". It's barely acceptable in the U.S. I do know a gay man who lived in Turkey for a couple of years, and seemed to do quite well. I don't know how discreet he had to be, however.
West Turkey is modern, but only west Turkey..
It's the same with anywhere, just don't shove that fact in peoples faces and expect them to accept you.
it depends, if you live in a upper-class Istanbul district you can be accepted, but if you live in a rural area of eastern Turkey you wouls be stoned to death in the name of Allah
Ohh, is it acceptable on somewhere else?
No.
