what should I expect from Belgium?

So my company are moving me to Belgium (Ghent) to work on short notice. I'm just curious about the Belgian lifestyle and its people. I'm 23/M and Irish. I can speak a little French.

Are Belgian people nice?

Is it cheap there?

Any info on the Belgian people and what makes them happy/sad would be great.

In Ghent most people speak Dutch/Flemish - not French -

Your English will be usable 90% of the time -

Belgians are great people (I am one, although I am an expat since long time) -

What makes them happy...? - Only one answer = BEER -

There are some 200+ different beers brewed in Belgium -

Ghent is not too expensive -

The city is located 45 minutes away from the beaches on the North Sea -

Brussels, is 35 minutes train ride away -

Bruges (a lovely historic city) is only a short distance away -

Enjoy your stay -

People who are negative about Belgium are often people who have never been there. It has a lot to offer, good food and beer being just the start of it.

It's not cheap, and they like their beer, and you can expect to eat very well.

All in all, they're nice people.
