why are roma so hated in Europe?

From people I met from Europe from all different countries, Greece, Poland, Ukraine, all different European people I met seem to resent Roma people. I don't know if they are actually racist, because they are talking to me nicely, and I am a visible minority, but they never have anything good to say about Roma people.

what's with that? I don't know much about Roma but I don't think they can all be bad people.

No, of course they aren't all bad people.

But statistically they commit a lot of crimes. They also have their own ways.

They usually keep to their own communities -> they aren't seen as countrymen.

On the other hand I'm sad for those of them who are good people,

but on the other hand I tend to stay away from them. They have threatened to stab me for no reason at all. Once a father of a boy in my hometown was killed by a group of them. I can perfectly understand why they are often overlooked.

Still, everyone should be treated as individuals.

What @Just said + most countries governments treat them as some sort of protected "species". They get everything free - electricity, water, housing and a lot of benefits. People work hard for those things but Roma get everything for free, doing nothing and in a lot of cases, stealing and/or doing other crimes. Roma parents sometimes refuse to send their kids to school even though education is compulsory. There have even been cases when Roma boys raped little girls in elementary school.

But again, as Just said, everyone should be treated as an individual, not as a part of a group. I also feel sorry for the injustice done to some Roma just because they're Roma.

Long history of not fitting in with locals. Traveling around different area and having crimes in small towns whenever they used to show up.

I am an American living in Hungary.

I once asked my SIL and husband to hire a few Gypsy men to help with some digging around my SIL home. They both freaked on me and said if they did that the neighbors when never forgive them for inviting Gypsies over.

I asked why they were so hated and disliked and I was told that I just wouldn't understand because I was American.

Seems even Americans are not trusted in Europe.

After living now in Hu for a few years, I now sort of understand how much trouble some Gypsy groups can be, of course not everyone is bad but those who are make the news.

I was also a victim of a would be purse snatching from a Gypsy man and women when I was walking post surgery on crutches.

I had to beat the man off with one of my crutches on a Budapest sidewalk.

Some people have sunk so low they bring everyone in their culture down with them.

I did surprise the man by beating him but I am part Mohawk Indian and we have had our own problems in our own country of the Americas.

I could be more understanding of the Gypsy culture if they were not so rough and out to get from others.

Basically they are like the white trash of America, but in Europe. They travel everywhere, steal, trespass. I used to own a trampoline and in the night you would hear them playing on it. They don't work or do anything they just take our things and they cause solo much trouble. they train there kids at a very young age how to steal and pick-pocket and sometime (This happened to me in Italy). Like 15 Roma kids came up to me and started putting their hands all over me, basically trying to steal whats on me, and I am not gonna hit the kids so i didn't know what to do really.

I also feel sorry to the good ones who simply live that life. Not all are like this, but many ruin it for the others.

Hated is a very heated word but generally Roma are looked down upon because in their majority they take advantage of anything they can get out of people and governments.

There are however Roma who legitimately try to earn a decent living and in doing so they have been assimilated into their local societies, but even amongst them there are casts that distinguish them.

Living under their own rules and ways, most of them do not comply with social standards and instead try to take advantage of anything they can get away with. In fact, they demand to be treated as a suffering and despised minority that everything is owed to them and what they can't get, they take by force or stealing.

The truth is they hate us and they think of us as suckers.

They're very visible in the street attracting negative attention towards themselves, either stealing or begging.
