Turkey has no friends among the Greeks.
Turkey is anti-democratic and will not be admitted to the European Union.
because the Greek war of independence was bitterly contested with attrocities on both sides. Christians versus Muslims.
The Ottoman empire was dying and they desperately needed to keep a foothold in Europe.
Because of...
- Their "founding father", Ataturk, who was just as cruel as Hitler (and an inspiration to him, actually)
- The Pontic Genocide (in which several hundreds of thousands of inhabitants were killed in "massacres, persecution and death marches", while those who survived had to leave their villages as they were being destroyed)
- The catastrophe of Smyrna (a city set ablaze by Ataturk's forces, to eliminate peaceful non-Turkish people and claim everything they had.. some tens of thousands of Greeks were killed, while many others fled to Greece or died trying..)
- The Turkish invasion of Cyprus (thousands of Greeks killed/missing.. half of the land was "stolen" by Turkey, who then gradually sent thousands of its citizens to move in and "counterbalance" the Greek population of a land that had been Greek since Homeric times). Furthermore, the (ghost) city of Varosha (Ammochostos) still remains closed off, under illegal Turkish occupation
- The Crisis of Imia
- (Nowadays) Turks allowing illegal immigrants to Greece in exchange of money
- The 400 years of Ottoman slavery
- The seizure of Constantinople (and the Greek Orthodox Patriarchal church of Ayia Sofia turned into a mosque)
- etc.
Wherever peaceful Greeks were living a successful life (both economically and culturally speaking), Turks stormed in, destroying everything and killing ruthlessly. Until this day, Turkey refuses to recognize most of its crimes and even continues to participate in wrongdoings against its neighbors.
400 years of Ottoman occupation and supression as well as the constant current political instability they maintain with a casus belli, are enough reasons to make Turkey an untrustworthy neighbor.
