Because the media is mainly owned by large corporations whose agenda is far to the right in preserving their huge profits and accomplishing this by the propaganda of fear, sexual salaciousness and fictional get rich quick schemes or fame via show biz. This is of course tied in with the low educational standards in Britain, which means the majority of the population cannot properly comprehend the contents of the Guardian or the Independent. All newspapers except the Daily Mail have seen a massive decline in circulation in recent years, so their influence is slowly waning.
