Generally, however, stopping by is permitted as long as it's not so frequent that its harassment. You typically do not have to permit entry unannounced.
If you were afraid of the person at the door, you needed to call the police.
Technically, the UK, by law, requires *permission* given with 24 hours notice to enter "the property". Where they draw the line on "property" in the UK will depend on your laws. It would likely grant the landlord reasonable access to the 'common entry points', like your sidewalk, your entry path, and your landing, as long as it's not frequent entry or used for harassment or lengthy entry. The LL will probably have similar rights as any stranger to enter the property and ring the doorbell, within reason, unless UK law specifically says they cannot enter at all.
Yes, he is allowed to inspect the outside of the dwelling anytime he chooses.
And, furthermore, there are NO laws against knocking on someone's door.
It also seems that you were behind on your rent. There are no laws against asking for monies owed.
Most people bang on the door if they are trying to get someone to answer the door not just landlords. So how are you going to stop people from doing it?
he is allowed to knock, but can't come back repeatedly to the point of being an annoyance. If he just wanted to talke to you that would be fine, especially if he didn't want to come in.
It's not illegal for your next door neighbor to come knock on your front door. Why would it be illegal for your landlord to knock on it?
If someone is knocking on your door it's up to you whether you choose to answer or not.
He does not have to give notice if he is not entering the dwelling.
However, if he knocks on the door and you allow him inside, you have forfeited your "right" to advance notice.
Why not
It is not illegal to knock your door especially if you have rent arrears and need it sorted
I will add, he came back again 2 days later, again with no notice, but this time I heard his quiet knock and I answered and spoke to him.
I know that as a tenant, I have the right to receive at least 24 hours notice for a property visit by the landlord or letting agency.
I am a little unclear about whether or not the landlord needs to give that same period of notice if he wishes to make a visit to me at the property, with no intention of actually entering.
He came over unannounced and I was in the shower. He wanted to talk to me about some rent arrears which I was sorting out through the letting agent. Because I didn't answer immediately, he began to bang on the door quite loudly, aggressively even. It was this point that I heard it but was too frightened to answer. I looked through the peephole in the door but I didn't recognise him (I had never met the landlord before as we go through an agency).
Is he allowed to do this?
