Am I stiil financially responsible for exterminating the bedbugs?

read your lease cause in most states its in the lease beg bugs is. grounds for evictions and tenants are responsible for treatment of them

just moved. you're going to have to know everything in your house away cause of them. My friend had beg bugs earlier this year at their home and they had to moved and get all new furniture. Now u can call your city code enforcement officer through the city to come out and record, take pictures of the unit and this will allow u to move without paying to break your lease. cause they are going to say home isn't fit to live in and give the landlord like 3 days to have pest control come in, not his own ppl but professionals or he's going to be court with the city within 15days answering to them

Bed bugs are 99% of the time responsible for bringing in bed bugs. Yes there is the rare 1% but most of the time they come in on you or your stuff. Because of this YES you are still responsible for treating the unit you vacated. If you do not pay voluntarily the law is on their side to sue you for the cost. I'm not saying its fair to that rare 1% but these are the facts.

Also this is not legal grounds to break your lease so if you did they have the legal right to sue you for that too.

Unfortunately fair & legal are not always the same thing in this business.

Yes, I have advice. Research state and city laws regarding bedbugs in rental units. In areas where bedbugs are a problem, cities and states scrambled a few years ago and got all kinds of legislation passed to help protect tenants.

In areas that don't have bedbug specific policies, you follow the general pest policies or you hire an attorney to find out case law and/or to get new law made.

If you are responsible for the bedbugs, then the way to get correct treatment is to pay for it yourself. No more landlord loans.

Yes, unless you were there when you moved in then your responsible.

We informed our landlord that we had bedbugs, and agreed to pay for professional heat or heat and chemical combination treatment, $2500, from a reputable pest control company. Our agreement was that the landlord would pay and we would pay him back over six months. After two estimates, he asked us to contact a less expensive company regarding chemical treatment only. We informed him that we would prefer heat because of the effectiveness of the treatment. Even though we were contacting companies for estimates for an asap appt (because I was asked not to return to work until after treatment), the landlord wanted to have his maintenance person spray chemicals first. I informed him that I had been informed by two of the three companies that our attempts could make matters worse, causing the bedbugs to scatter deep into the walls, and decreasing the effectiveness of any professional treatment. Still, he did it anyway, and he was NOT thorough. Four days later, I am being bitten and finding living white 'babies' in my box spring in the exact spot as before. The maintenance person was only in our home for approx. 25 mins "treating" seven lived-in rooms. At this point after consulting a professional, we've decided to move out and heat treat a uhaul full of all of our possessions. I don't believe that we should have to pay for any treatment of the property because the landlord's lack of knowledge and the maintenance person's incompetence have worsened things. Any advice?
