That means you are liable for rent until somebody takes over the lease
Nobody's asking for your opinion whether that is stupid or not
What IS stupid is you thinking you can get out of a contract when you feel like it without there being any consequences.
Sounds like you signed the lease renewal and then decided you didn't want to be a part of it anymore. Well, the whole point of a lease is for situations like this...you still owe the rent...
I think you screwed yourself by not obtaining a release from the renewal contract, in writing. So it is technically your fault, not theirs.
They are correct in what they are doing, but they must take an active role in getting it re-rented as soon as they can. If they don't you would probably be able to recover some of the extra rent you paid if they can't prove they really tried to rent it out, but you would have to sue them to recover this.
If you sign a contract it can not be "canceled" unless both parties agree to cancel. It sounds like the are accepting your cancelation as long as you cover any damages they incur. Depending on exactly what was in all your paperwork- I bet they are within their rights.
Saying it and collecting it are 2 different things.
You signed a new lease. They're right and you're wrong.
If you have a lease you are abandoning, yes you owe rent until they re-rent it.
Okay so I stayed at an apartment in Dallas Texas for a year downtown Dallas and I signed to renew but canceled it before it started they send me a vacant fee and to pay the remainder of the month which equal up to 2500ish so okay I thought I was clear then they called me and said I have to pay the apartment till someone moves in so I ask what if nobody moves in within 6 month they said I have to keep paying the monthly until someone moves in is that true ? That's stupid if you ask me I moved out paid my fees and everything
