You need to be friendly. Talk to the people and get them to say Yes a few times before making the pitch.
An example: A women answers the door, and you can tell she has kids. Talk to her about saving on groceries. The paper has coupons. Talk about local listings and events. Then tell her the discount she gets if she gets the paper now. If you get a NO, ask why. Ask if they don't think it is a good value. Don't let them get away that easy!
Also try standing at the entrance of the grocery store. You will see a lot more people in a short time.
You have to sell the product! There is nothing better than a real paper, with a cup of coffee in the morning. If you make a sale, come back and ask if they are happy with the delivery. Then hit the neighbors, and tell them what you just did for the neighbors.
Two things:
1) No one likes having their door knocked on so someone can sell them stuff. I don't care WHAT is being sold. Customers shop at a time of THEIR choosing. And if they want to shop from home they use the internet.
2) Printed newspapers are a dying product. Most people use the internet.
Sorry, you are selling an antiquated product in an antiquated way. You might as well be selling phone books or wagon wheels.
Do YOU have a print news subscription? And did YOU buy it from a door to door salesperson?
people don't read the paper any more they get the news online or from their phone.
Maybe think about finding another place to approach people, like in a Laundromat or at the park, where they won't be so annoyed about being bothered?
The old way of selling is dead dead dead. Also, people read news on their cellphones these days. Get a job with better future.
