Simple, go ahead and make a prototype, even if it is with tape and glue and looks hideous!
Then improve on it, make it look presentable, patent the idea! then go ahead and find an investor/means of production then find a means of distribution, market and sell!
One thing to do is to record everything you do as regards design & design change. This may help if you have any disputes in the future. The only thing I can suggest is read "from inventor to entrepreneur" by Celia Gates http://www.shesingenious.org/public/228....
I have no interest in this book or author except that I met her on the train from London to Brighton once and have read the book. She invented a special saucepan and successfully marketed it (and was European Female Designer of the year, 2007). The book chronicles her journey from the invention to market and you will find it well worth the money.
