You are at the mercy of the whims of a free host they can cancel your account for any reason, free accounts may be slower, or limit the traffic to a low level, often there is advertising added to your pages.
A paid hosting account gives you more control, as long as you pay your bill you can out whatever you want on the site and can have more visitors, be aware so called "unlimited" accounts still have data volume and cpu load limits, if you have exceptionally heavy loads (like on a big download site) they will force you to upgrade to a more expensive account. Many paid accounts in the $8 a month range allow an unlimited number of sites as well. You should hopefully have better support on a paid account.
The other aspect is the domain name, free accounts give you a sub-domain, some allow you to add a custom domain name you obtain elsewhere for about $12 a year. Many paid accounts include a domain name in the bundle deal.
Google's Blogger is an example of a free host with no forced advertising and no paid upgrades, it gives better performance than some paid shard hosts running the Wordpress.
