It has to be patentable. So. No one else has thought of it before. There has to be an inventive step. And it should not be obvious to anyone skilled in the art.
So google things that do similar jobs. Search patents on mousetraps or whatever. It's unlikely you have met those criteria but if you have find a patent lawyer and they will take money off you to do a patent search and see if you have anything novel. If you have you'll need a patent agent to write the patent as it has to be in ver particular language.
Then you file for a couple of £k. A while later you start getting examined in different territories (countries) so you'll have to pay for your patent to be translated into Japanese etc. Then at examination you'll have to defend your claims modify them deal with prior art etc etc. it's very tough expensive and long. You need deep pockets or a backer.
I think the process can be fairly expensive, most require a lawyer type just to get the patent application wording correct.
The first step can be a search for existing patents:

I have heard something about being able to retroactively patent a product after being first to market it, up to a year later.
There are inventor assistant services that might charge something like $4000 to help develop patent a product, their disclaimers remind you that most products are failures.
I recently saw a PBS profile on Quirky.com a crowd sourcing product inception site. There are some 400k free members, and a $10 invention submission fee, they featured a flexible power strip that accommodates a mix of wall warts, some inventor royalties have amounted to $600,000.
First you document your invention. Then you have a professional patent search done, which will tell you if you're likely to be wasting your time and money. Then (assuming the search is good), you hire a patent agent or attorney to draft and file a patent application. Then, with "patent pending", you confidentially approach various potential investors who will fund your product development, not to mention the patent prosecution expenses...
Before you patent something you have to be considering makingit as otherwise it's just a document. As for the patent you have to apply for it here at the Intellectual Property office which is in South Wales.
