How much rent can I afford?

I can't believe a company is moving a person who only makes $12/hour. If they arent paying 100% of your moving expenses, don't move. If you do move, look for rooms to rent instead of your own place. If you are really traveling that much, you wont have any time at all for outside maintenence, so dont even look at houses.

I don't think I would want to put myself under that much stress. Always work out your salary, factor in food, living, petrol, minus $100 and then use what it left. The reason you are keeping the extra $100 spare is for emergencies, if your car needs to go to the mechanic, if something goes wrong and you need some extra cash. It is never a good thing to use your whole salary on rent.

Most landlords require that your rent is no more than 30% of your income (overtime not included).

You would also need to figure out your expenses to find out how much you can afford.

You would need to pay your own electric, Internet, and cable.

Do you own a car? What about the car note, insurance, gas, and upkeep and maintenance on the car.

You would need to pay for your own food and cleaning supplies. How much do you expect to spend on food.

These are just some of those considerations to consider when you are moving out for the first time.

Good luck

R P is completely correct. When I rented they wanted to see 3x the rent amount in your monthly income, and that is ideal as you don't want to be house poor. You need to start looking at cheaper options or look for a roommate!

Most LL's want to see 3x the rent for income. So assuming you work 40 hrs per week:

12 * 40 = $480 per week

480 * 4.3 = $2064 per month

$2064 / 3 = $688 per month

You can qualify for up to $688 per month in rent.

My company is moving me and it will be my first place by myself (I'm 21) and I'm working on $12 an hour so after taxes for 2 weeks of working 80 hours, my check is $731.35. In the Spring and Fall season I'm out on the road and I make overtime and double time and that's how I make good money but when I'm strictly on straight time and only making $12, I'm not sure how much rent and bills a month i'll be able to afford a month and if I was to ask for a pay raise how much I should ask for. I'm looking at houses in the 800-900 range and would like to know how much I would need to make a month to survive if I was to ask for a pay raise. Thanks!
