One of the major factors in having a search engine index your site is traffic. The more traffic your site gets the more it's noticed by search engine spiders. Quality links, especially ones that link back to you are also very helpful. You can also submit your URL to Google's indexing but it's not a guarantee that the search engine will index your site and will likely start out with a low rank.
In a nutshell, quality content with keywords that are repeated in the pages that are relevant to the site.... lots of traffic to your site.... and YOUR OWN domain name will help you greatly. Sub domains are less likely to get high rankings.

The best way to rank in Google using WordPress is to use Yoast's SEO plugin. It makes adding important SEO elements to your posts and pages easy.
Most importantly you want to create new content using descriptive keywords and fill out the information completely: title, meta description, image file names (before uploading), img alt tags, and your copy all need to have relevant keywords in them.
Please keep in mind that what Google releases for keyword volumes are just estimates. If you are generating a variety of content with good keywords you will be surprised at some of the search strings that people use to find you.
