How to find out if land is owned?

Every land parcel in every US jurisdiction is "registered" for tax purposes, whether owned by an individual, government agency, corporation or otherwise. They may be arranged on the assessor's "tax map" whether or not there are any roads or streets within miles.

Depending upon state laws, you would not be criminally "trespassing" unless there is a fence or signs telling you to keep out. However, many states require "written landowner permission" to ride motorized ATV/motorcycle/snowmobiles on private property, let alone cut any new trails.

It's possible the local off-road club may already know the owners and have permission for members of the club to ride there.

Your county assessor's office has a map of every single inch of the county land/buildings and their owners. Check their website and if you are living in a richer county, chances are the map is online waiting for you.....

Simple. Land in Antarctica is not owned. All land anywhere else in on earth is owned. Figuring out who owns it might be more difficult. But if it on earth and it is not in Antarctica, then it is owned. If it is not on earth (for example, if it is on the moon, an asteroid, or another planet), then it is not owned.

google the street nearest it.

compare it to county tax records.

Hi, a friend and I found a big trail cut into a forest down the road, looks to be for 4 wheelers. However, it looks to be desolate. There are no signs posted. No address. Nothing. It looks to be unregistered land. We'd like to add trail to what's there, but before that we'd like to make sure we aren't trespassing. I was thinking of going to my parish assessors office and hoping they'd help me out. Is there any other way to do this? Keep in mind, there is no address. The address google maps gave me doesn't work on any resources.

Thanks!
