How to find the history of this house?

It sounds like the house is no longer level and might have a draft or two. Three are no records of when it was or was not level. Nor when a draft started.

You can solve the draft issues with weather stripping. The level issue is tougher, but sometimes adjusting the hinges solves the problem with the doors moving.

I am not sure why you think it is creepy, it is just the result of natural settling of the house.

I live in an old house too, doors open by themselves and certain ones shut by themselves, they stick closed and are hard to open, I hear funny noises, Wood gets old, houses settle, they become less than level and shift during cold and warm weather, the ground heaves and the house shifts, put a marble in the middle of one of the rooms with a wooden floor and watch it roll all over because the house has some sagging, boards are warped. I am sure it is nothing more than old house syndrome. relax

Your state probably has an online Department of Taxation site, and has records like that. For Maryland, for example:

You can give power to a house or power to God.

I just started renting the first floor of a house that was built in 1900. Normally I am not worried about moving into old houses (except for structural problems) but some creepy things are happening in this house and I want to know the history of it, such as previous tenants etc.

Creepy things that are happening are, sometimes when I go down the basement (which is empty except for the washer and dryer) the door shuts itself and wont open until I bang myself on it again and again. Once it actually locked and I had to scream for my boyfriend to let me out. Also closet doors open for no reason, like I would go to sleep with the doors closed and in the morning they are wide open! for some reason I'm not scared of these things but I am curious to know the history of the house.

Anything can happen in a century old house and I would rather know about it.
