everything i'd need to survive in life on this budget
Here you could get an apartment for $875 and still live comfortably in a one bedroom as people here live on $15,000 or less. Maybe you should have said which state you live in.
Things to avoid would be new cars and large car payments (car should be under $14,000), don't eat at restaurants, don't go out for social events (drinking costs a mint) or for the movies (they're expensive today), or dating or buying gifts for the family and friends, don't belong to a spa/gym, get dialup, get rid of cable tv, be careful about overusing electricity and water. You don't need to live with another person. Don't buy too much as far as furniture is concerned because you might have to store it at some point and that gets costly. Don't drive a lot since gas is expensive (combine your trips or take a weekend job as well as your daily job). Walmart is ok for buying clothes (don't buy over $50 a month). And yes you do need a budget. Don't get yourself in debt with a credit card as the interest on them will eat you alive.
Keep your costs down:
Get a roommate
Avoid car payments-buy something affordable and used in cash
Rein in your spending, clothes are pretty durable, so if you are shopping more than 1-2x's a year, you are shopping too much.
Your total rent/utilities should only take up about 25-30% of your income.
Your budget will be tight, but you are not destitute.
I would love to make that much. I survive on $29500/ yr. I do not buy cloths unless I absolutely need to, I do not eat out but once in a while and on birthdays & anniversary (with bf 2 yrs come Oct). I have a decent place to live for $750/ mo. I do just fine on groceries including feeding 2 little dogs. Its not easy sometimes but you just have to stick to the necessities & do not buy what you do not need.
The key to anyone being successful in earning any amount of money be it $40,000 or $40 million is preparing and staying within your budget. having more month left than you have money left is a good sign that your budget is not working.
You would need to make a budget that cover rent/mortgage, food, clothing, utilities, transportation, Insurance( health, car and renters/mortgage), and entertainment. Most of all you would need a savings plan. (Without a savings plan, you plan to fail financially) In having a saving plan, if you are laid off or has an emergency, you are not trying to make a decision as to if you want to pay your bills/debts or taking care of the emergency or being laid off.
Once you have established this budget, you are required to live within this budget and not deviate from it for any reason. You may alter your budget from time to time to accommodate a pay raise or drop in pay for a new job. This adjustment must make sense and is not a reason to steal from yourself.
Living above your means is not making good financial decisions such as living in an apartment you are not able to afford, getting clothing that is out of your budget, because your friend has such an item. Buying an expensive car you are not able to afford.
You only have to make good common sense financial decisions to stay within your budget.
I hope this has been of some benefit to you, good luck.
