most likely use your security deposit to fund the removal of property.
Your best bet all around is to get ahold of the managment people and tell them you're stuck - they might know of a few burly men available that could do all you need for $20 each in cash.
The cost to dispose of it will come out of your security deposit.
You are "functionally" responsible to your landlord for the entire mess, if you're still there after the roommate has left.
Try to work out something with the landlord. Keep track of what it costs you to deal with it, in hopes of billing some of it to the ex-roommate some day.
Under NC laws, the landlord only has to "store" the abandoned stuff for seven days and may then dispose of it, if you were served a "writ of eviction", if it's worth less than $500.
So, in theory, you could simply leave the whole mess and let them bill you to clean it up, or try to resolve it beforehand.
Otherwise, anything you leave there is deemed "abandoned" after you have been given 10 days' notice, posted at the premises, after which they can donate your stuff to charity (up to $750 worth, to be held for your claim up to 30 days) or else they have to store your stuff, notify you where it is, and give you 7 days in which to claim it or else they can sell it or "auction it off", keeping the proceeds for you for up to a week, after which the money goes to the county government, minus storage fees.
First of all:
When you and/or your (former) roommate moved into the apartment, was it already furnished
or is the furniture you mention here either yours or his? If yours & you don't want to deal with
moving it to your new place, I suggest mentioning it to your landlord, especially if it's furniture
which he can use to rent the apt to future tenants as a (at least partially) " furnished " one and
gives him more than if it were unfurnished. If you don't have room at your new place, take pics
and either put it in storage until you find a seller, and / or put an ad on your local craigslist site
( craigslist.org ) and get what you can for it. As for cleaning up for 2 people on short notice see
if the landlord knows a reliable maid who can do that while you prepare boxes for your move.
The landlord has the right to charge you for anything left behind by you or your roommate.
the owner will call professional moves and sue you for the bill
put it on the street with a sign saying FREE
or call goodwill,, they pick up furntire at no cost if it's good
My roommate moved out and left me with EVERYTHING and is leaving it up to me to get rid of it. Hasn't helped with anything. I don't know where to put this furniture and no one wants it. What will they do if I leave it behind? I have to be out by Wednesday and is trying to clean up 2 people's doings by my lonesome. The kitchen and living room. Smh. I live in NC if that helps with anything.
