Landlord changed my locks without notice?

Even if she does truly believe (no matter if she is wrong) that you have not paid the rent it is illegal in most states to change the locks without a court ordered eviction. She is legally required to serve you a pay or quite notice & then take you to court before she can change the locks. You need to sue her for a constructive eviction. A constructive eviction is when the landlord illegally forces you to move out without using the proper legally required procedures. Unfortunately you will need to find some place to stay and get some replacement uniforms from work in the interim. You may never get your stuff back but the court can force her to pay you the value of what she has essentially stolen.

The laws on this would mostly be state laws. In Texas the law would make it legal for landlord to do this in certain circumstances. It would also say that you have a right to access your stuff and that you may have a right to a new key that works on the door. If you contact the landlord and they will not allow you to get your stuff or let you back in then you should contact a lawyer. Your city may have a renters rights type organization- contact city hall and ask for help.

Police can't help you as this is a civil matter and if you were to call a locksmith it could be considered trespassing. It sounds like you have already moved out and perhaps your landlord perceives that you have abandoned the unit. Google landlord tenant laws in your state and look for "abandonment." However if your lease is still in effect you have a right to access.

Did you move out? Did you give notice that you were vacating? Contact the landlord for access to your stuff, it is likely being stored as you'd need to leave it there 30 days to be considered abandoned.

If the your stuff is simply gone, you should sue.

She can only do that if you moved out. Were you still sleeping there? She can change the locks even if you left trash.

Call the police, have proof you live there. Sue LL for constructive eviction.

Go to the police, you need to get access to your stuff.

I went to my apartment yesterday to pick up the remainder of my belongings. (All of my summer clothes, work uniforms, some valuables) The landlord changed my locks. I have no received any notification and have paid my rent on time. Unfortunately my landlord has been trying to evict me claiming I didn't pay her. (I made the mistake of paying in cash.) I have not been getting any mail either. I highly believe that they have been tampering with my mail because my family has even left notes on my door that I never received. My landlord has always been the type to just walk right on into my apartment without any notification and has even left a letter on my bed! But this is the final straw when it comes to invasion of privacy. She has all of my belongings, some of my money and everything else. I had to call out of work because I cannot even access my uniform. What can I do? Is this legal for her to do randomly without notifying me?? Can I get a locksmith or should I get the cops involved?
