Link Exchange is good, but it should be with "do follow" websites

I suggest you to go for creating EDU or GOV backlinks

That's a somewhat old school technique, the Three-way/In-direct Exchanges is about deceiving the search engines, to paraphrase Google "any link generated for the purposes of manipulating search ranking is a violation of the guidelines" they can still identify some of the convoluted exchange patterns and may well penalize your ranking for it. There are legitimate reasons for related sites in the same industry to link to one another, that's OK. It's links from completely unrelated sites that can raise a red flag. I don't use link exchanges, your not as in control of your own fate and have to employ monitoring systems to be sure your partner is maintaining their half of the deal. Some exchange management systems actually slip in paid customer sites into the system.

As said above that is an old school way of going about things. Too be honest I'd probably avoid it, if you want niche related backlinks, send emails to related websites, comment on related forums and blogs.

Is he offering you money for it ?

Link exchanges can be beneficial just make sure he's not asking too much of you.

The best way to go about links is this: Is the out-going link of real benefit to my visitors. Is the incoming link of benefit to the other website (not so sure the latter is that important). Any link that is made solely, or mainly, to generate PR, link juice or non-targetted visitors is likely to be detrimental to you.

I was sent an email today by a webmaster wanting to carry out a link exchange. I understand the importance of link building, and have undergone some link building in one-way directories and blog comments. But I don't fully understand if two-way or even three way links are advisable. Also if I'm expected to put a link on my site to another site, would I need to write a blog on the websites topic and include the link there?

This is what was said:

Three-way/In-direct Exchanges

Links from related sites within content

High PR and/or Content Backlinks

Can someone also help explain this please.
