Potential craigslist scam? HELP?

Posted at: 2015-03-04
Total scam. You do not hand over money until you have seen and tried out the vehicle in person. Check the title for inconsistencies, too. Too many suspicious things about this deal. SCAM! Don't fall for it.

Total scam.

> She and her husband moved to start fresh.

Canadian immigration systems does not work that way. And why wouldn't they just sell the vehicle in Canada.

>A guy in my area bought it and had it shipped here, but he backed out afterwards

How? You can't ship a Canadian registered vehicle across the border without going through a long process to import it. This includes showing title to the vehicle, title searches, VIN checks, lean checks, mechanics inspections, paying duties, environmental forms, and transferring the registry to that of a US state. There is no way he could ship it across the border without having the title.

No one in Canada is going to sell a car to a US person, give them title, allow them to import it to the US, and then accept it back again. In order to accept it back they would need to transfer the title back and re-import it back into Canada. That would cost more than the vehicle is worth.

>I can test it for 5 days and if I don't like it,

How? Whose name is this vehicle insured under? What lunatic would allow a total stranger, in a different country to drive a vehicle under their insurance? How can they even have insurance if they don't live in the state? What happens if you run over some school children? Hint... the owner gets sued.

>through Google Wallet

The payment option also doesn't make sense. Why not just ask for a check? Why use some payment system which allows you to be anonymous. And who is looking after the vehicle while in the US? If you trust this person to look after your car, why not allow them to accept the money and send it to you. Makes no sense.

This is a total scam. Most likely the vehicle was stolen or a write off (likely from New Orleans) and they can't get a registration, plates, or insurance on the vehicle... so they are making up this "we are in Canada" thing hoping to give it to someone else.

Scam

Google Wallet does not permit vehicle sales under any circumstances. Google Wallet is only used with Google merchants who have a Google Buy button on the payment page of their ecommerce site

You can't just ship a car from Canada to the US.

If a guy in your area has it, take it out for a test drive. Have your fiance look at it too. Check it out for performance, rust, or faulty parts.

But it does sound like a scam to make you buy something you'll never actually receive. Or buy junk that you can't get a refund on. So test drive it in person and pay person-to-person.

Too many odd conditions...

If they got the photo from the internet and didn't shoot their own the scam odds are doubled.

Ask again to view the vehicle FIRST.

A friend dumbly got burned for $5000 after being shown various owner documentation they probably got from a real seller.

sounds like a scam

why don't she have the truck yes someone else bought it from her but no longer wants it so he should be selling it not her...

she going to pay for all the expenses if you don't like it? right there tells me this is a scam most people aren't like that

most private sellers do not accept returns of cars they sold 99.9% of time it's all sale final

I would just find a different car to purchase

It's most likely a scam. I know of a person that this happened to. It's not worth the trouble, i recommend you don't do it.

I found a great deal on a 98 Ford Ranger XLT truck on craigslist listed in my city. It has 46K miles and appears in good shape. The lady selling it says she is trying to get rid of it because it was her son's who died in a car accident and it brings bad memories. Anyways, we have been emailing since yesterday and I asked to see it.

Then, she hits me with the news that she lives in Canada. She and her husband moved to start fresh. A guy in my area bought it and had it shipped here, but he backed out afterwards and asked for a refund after getting behind on his mortgage. If I want it, shipping will be free, since it's already here. It will get to me within 2-3 days. I can test it for 5 days and if I don't like it, I can have it shipped back to her at her expense.

The entire transaction will take place through Google Wallet and she won't see a penny unless I tell them to release the money to her right away or something like that... I don't know. I've used paypal but I had never heard of Google Wallet til today. She also goes on to say she can have Google send me an email to explain the process further, but she needs my full name, address, and phone number. Does this sound legit? I'm a bit skeptical... I have yet to reply.

I reverse image searched her truck and it came up clear of reappearing on the web, but I don't know... I've also reverse image searched her pic on her gmail and it showed up on a couple different sites, so I'm not sure it's her... My fiance doesn't see the harm in sending her our info to find out how to process the order. Any advice from someone who may have dealt with a situation like this? I don't want to be scammed. It's $1800.
