Use your first year to build your site and put good security onto it. then start to promote it.
My site i have paid to get google webmaster and tools and its very useful but I have only just done this after putting security features in place.
Im looking at 4 years of hard work before my site actually makes a profit. but those hits are good. How old is your site.
Google adsense is just one tool you can use, you can also promote affiliate products and things like that in order to monetize your traffic.
It really depends what kind of hits...It could be bots, people spamming, and etc.....Go to google anlaystic or whatever...

According to, where my website is hosted, it is saying that I got (98,314) hits in 16 days.
