You can do social bookmarking,
You can do blog commenting,
You can post in your niche forums and use your signature to link to your website,
You can make the web 2.0 blogs etc
to get the backlinks to your website.
Make a twitter profile for your website, make a facebook fan page for your website, make a pinterest profile etc
This info is all over the place, I can't really be bothered explaining it again, you can send me a message if you want, but I'm not going to post links to the thousands of words you need to read here. Back link = link to your site from the right link text. An article that you write on another site is a good back link, if it's a good relevant site. A link pyramid of articles plus social media is good enough to make good SEO, if you have a natural looking set up the whole way.

There are other ways to get traffic to your website. You can get involved with other businesses from around the world. I highly recommend you creating a fan page on Facebook. I recently bought a booklet from a blogger by the name of, James Cardigan! The book actually gave me great ideas, despite having a few typos here and there. But, this guy reaches over 30,000 people a day on his blog through facebook!
So I've started a website for my business and I'm trying to pull as much traffic as possible. I understand that 80% of seo contributes to linking with other sites. I've been reading a bit about it and still don't really understand how it works at all. My business is a painting and decorating company, how would I even begin to link up with other sites? How does it work and how do I get people to link to my website? Who would actually be interested in linking to my page.. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
