If someone calls and asks for Rob... you know that they are trying to reach you for business reasons, and that they probably don't know you that well.

I think Rob is fine. My big big boss's real name is Edward but he goes by Kim, and that's how he refers to himself professionally in emails and cards. It's never been an issue.

I need to get new business cards. My legal name is Roberto, I get called Robert or Rob. The problem I have had in the past is when I put Roberto people call and either make comments like I thought you would have an accent or not speak English or start talking to me in spanish.

Does Rob seem unprofessional is Robert better?
