I think even while trying to promote you're product or service to a range of audinece's, you cannot be extremely sure what you're TARGET AUDIENCE must be from the start, so marketing is a learning process for you as well as you're future customers. It is the business of promotion but also:

In my opinion marketing is promoting and convincing customer to get attracted to the product.
Internet marketing is all about good content and traffic. Remeber forever you can dick someone only once(ok max twice ;) ) but if give them quality product,tip or somothing what they were really looking for you resolve their problem . I guarnty you that they will come back asking for more.
However even when have quality offer without traffic you are nothing.You can sell your domain print your site and go to market.Noone see diffrence

To me, marketing is all about how to get your product to its target audience and how you can convert these audience into your buyers/customer.
