2 way links are reciprocal exchanges between two sites intended to be beneficial to both, search engines consider this to be search manipulation in violation of their guidelines when it's between 2 unrelated sites, like an electronics retailer and a hotel exchanging links, these simple exchanges are easily detected.
3 way links are a more convoluted strategy intended to conceal the transaction from the search engines, involving at least one party owning 2 sites arranging for site A to link to site B in exchange for site C linking to site A, these arrangements can still be detected by the all seeing search engines.
1 way links are when a site receives a link without providing a link in return. This would be the least suspicious type, making a comment on a blog that includes a link would be a one way link to the commenter's site, paying a site to link to your site would also be a one way link, though there is a reciprocation of another type.
One way links: One-way links are links to your site from sites which do not receive a link from your site. One-way links are good to have because they increase your link popularity - the more number of pages linking to your site, More popularity your site will get. Search engines such as Google place huge importance on link popularity when ranking your site.
Two way links: Two way links are also called reciprocal link is a mutual link between two websites to ensure mutual traffic. For example, John and James have websites. If John's website links to Jame's website, and John's website links to Jame's website, the websites are reciprocally linked. Two way linking between websites is no longer an important part of the search engine optimization process.Google and other search engines now do not give credit to reciprocal linking as it does not indicate genuine link popularity.
Three way links: Some webmasters own multiple sites. They try to build up one of their specific sites by offering link exchanges from their other sites. In doing this they add a link to you on their other site and get you to link to the main site they are trying to build up.
Problem with three way link building:
Most people engaging in 3 way link exchanges are doing it with the express intent to manipulate search results. This typically means they are trying to make automated bots think their ideas are better than they are, and are willing to do deceptive things to do it.
Hope this answers your question. Thanks a lot. All the best.
Lets assume 3 websites - 'A', 'B' & 'C'.
If 'A' linked to 'B' but 'B' is not linked to 'A' - In this case, if visitor or search engine crawler arrives at 'B', he/she/it can move to 'A' but no possibility for visitor to move back to 'B'. This is one-way!
If 'A' linked to 'B' and 'B' reciprocate. Means, if 'A' and 'B' both linked to each other - In this case, if visitor or search engine crawler arrives at 'B', he/she/it can move to 'A' and can move back to 'B' as there 'A 'is linked back to 'B'. This is two-way!
If 'A' linked to 'B' and 'A' places a link for 'B' on another site 'C' instead of on itself. In this case, if visitor or search engine crawler arrives at 'B', he/she/it can move to 'A' and can move back to 'B' but no possibility for visitor to move back to 'B' instead when a visitor or search engine crawler visit 'C' can move to 'A' via link placed on 'C'. You can see this is like "one-way". This is called "3-way"
