What's intellectual property?

Do not say the opposite of dumb or stupid.

Books, websites, products, published concepts, music, the list is pretty long.

Intellectual property is the product or outcome of one's creations of the mind. For example, even though Bugs Bunny is not a real product, he (or at least his image) is the product of someone's creativity and as such is that person's intellectual property. Intellectual property is different from an idea in that you cannot trademark an idea (i.e., I can't trademark all cartoon characters who happens to be "wabbits" and chew on a carrot) but you can trademark the actual product (the drawing and any other likenesses of Bugs). Apple, when it sued Microsoft over Windows versus the look an feel of IOS was claiming that the use of icons, pointers, cursors, etc. was their intellectual property (not mentioning they had stolen the idea from PARC) - they lost because an icon, a window, a cursor are generic items and only the underlying operating system was the intellectual property.

It's the bundle of rights that you have pertaining to an idea or concept - a logo, a song, a blueprint or schematic, a manufacturing system, a "trade dress" - that isn't a tangible product in and of itself that you can sell or produce, but still has economic value. Think of it as the difference between the physical CD that you buy at the store versus the song that's held on it. The CD is personal property (tangible), but the song is intellectual property.

It's anything that is a property from the result of creativity. If you get a copyright on say a website, that is now your intellectual property. If somebody tries to copy your content then you can sue them for intellectual property theft. Another example is say you designed a new kind of bike and you applied for a patent for the schematics of that bike. If someone then stole your schematics or made a similar bike then that would count ad intellectual theft.

Ideas and unique creations can exist in every business. They're important for long term financial success and can make you more competitive. Intellectual property is any product of the human intellect that the law protects from unauthorized use by others. It includes copyrights, patent & trademark.

things you thought up, things manufactured in your brain, like designs, blue prints, business ideas, plans etc

say if you come up with something, its yours and noone has the right to steal it. eg: copyrights to a song you wrote

Do not say the opposite of dumb or stupid.
