Most landlords will check with you 30 - 60 days before your lease expires if you intend to renew or not. Keep in mind this is a courtesy, they are not required to do so and some landlords don't. Since you appear to already know you want to renew then you can be proactive & notify them at least 30 days before your lease expires.

Since this is an apartment then go ask the people manning the front office - they'll correctly tell you everything you need to know (and is specific to your unique situation).
Talk to your landlord at least 30 days before. Your existing lease probably says what the procedure is, but it does not hurt to let your landlord know anyway.
