I know it seems unfair, but landlords are tired of students bailing on leases because they got a boyfriend, they want a puppy, they can't afford the place, they dropped out of school, they don't like the carpet, etc.

In Florida, there should be rental agencies you can work with. You can also talk to people who own condos and are looking for long term renters.

They do that because people who don't make that much have a tendency to default on their rent. Perhaps you should look to just rent a room from a private homeowner.

Why would you think a private landlord would be any different? They want to rent to someone capable of paying the rent too.

You need to be looking for a place you can afford, not a landlord you can try and fool. You can afford 1/3rd of your pay, look in that price range.
