Why did cigarette ads stop airing?

during the 60s and 70s there were numerous law suits filed against the tobacco company, same with the alcohol companies like bud and amheiner, only difference is the alcohol companies (at the time) had the revenue to fight against the law suits, the tobacco companies did not. as a result tobacco co like new port and marborol were forced to stop advertising their products. it did not effect their sales, there are still millions of americans and europeans who smoke on a daily basis.

Yes it was Congress who passed a public health law and President Nixon signed it in 1971 or so.

I found it online in about 4 seconds.

Used to be cigarette ads were allowed. But underwear and lingerie ads were not. As well as doctor and lawyer ads.

Now cigarette ads are banned. And women are flitting about in bra and panties. And lawyer ads are everywhere.

What a world, eh?

wasted high expense of advertising. places banning are increasing daily.

Obviously, I know it was because they're bad for you, cause cancer, etc. but specifically why did they stop advertising on television? Was it a specific lawsuit against the company? Of protest, or was it a law voted on passed by Congress in the 70s? And do they still make those flashy posters with the people on them at the beach doing stuff or at a nightclub? I have only seen the posters now that have a picture of the pack and then the price.
