Even without your elevated paranoia legal fees to get a patent may cost thousands of dollars.
Some professional inventors will tell you that good ideas alone are a dime a dozen, you have to put some skin in the game to be taken seriously, creating functional prototypes, etc. before being able to interest anyone else.
I find it counter productive to patent something. Your idea may be something that you may or may not be able to protect. I invented something 8 years ago. Checked the web out and then a search for patents. Nothing came close so I started to market my invention. Pretty dangerous stuff right? In 8 years I have not had anyone copy with the intent to sell.
If I had registered, the first thing that happens is that everyone looking or a project will have available to them my entire idea. They would just have to make a feimprovementsts on it and my efforts would be in vain. Also, I don't have a million dollars just laying around to enforce patent rights. The patent only gives you the right to pursueue offenders. You have to pay for the privilege.
I now employ 3 people to manufacture my invention. I market it world wide. I have distributors in 6 countries.
Well, if you don't trust attorneys, how could you ever possibly operate in business? You want legal advice but then say you don't trust attorneys...yeah, they'll jump to help you.
Either do the work yourself or pay someone to do it. You cannot be too scared to search online, too lazy to do the search yourself and too untrusting to let someone else do it....because then it simply wont get done.

I have an idea, scared to do a search on line to see if my idea is already out there.....I know there is a patent library to check on the item...been there, it will take MONTHS, maybe years to do this search, plus this library is 120 miles round trip, don't trust ANY attorney....help and thank you
