Calls about a computer in our house?

Posted at: 2015-03-04
These are awfully common - when I was off sick last years for 3 months - I got about 3 calls a day !

Smarty is right - you can sign up to the Telephone Preference Service - Google it, which will stop all the UK based calls, but it can't stop those from abroad - but it will stop some

In the meantime,do what my friend does - she asks them to ring off and never ring again otherwise they will get 'the whistle'.. If they do call back, she cuts them off mid-waffle, tells them that she told their colleague if they called back, they would get the whistle and then gives them a long trill on a very loud whistle she has .... and immediately rings off.

Works for her ! she doesn't get another call

Or try - asking them to hold and just put the phone down and walk away, or act stoopid and ask them to help you find the computer, because you don't even what it looks like, pretend to be deaf and ask them to repeat what they just said, then ask them again and again... ask them to get someone who can speak Geordie or Scouse on the phone as that is your first language, ask them how they got this number because currently it is being monitored by the Secret Service, tell them you just killed someone and the body is next to you in the room and they are now a 'witness' to that murder and you don't know what to do about them...

You have a number of choices.

1. Put the phone down.

2. Butt in and say "All our agents are busy. Your call is held in a queue. Please wait." Wait 30 seconds and say "Your call is important to us. Please wait." Repeat until they get bored.

3. Blow a whistle down the phone at her.

4. Demand to know where she got your number from, what exactly the Windows problem is, and with your IT knowledge, have fun bamboozling her.

5. Broken record assertiveness technique - "I'm not interested." "I'm not interested." "I'm not interested." "Which part of I'm not interested don't you understand?" "I'm not interested." "I'm not interested." "I'm not interested."

6. Ask her how to get a replacement for your computer's cupholder. You know, you press a button and it slides out. Fail to understand that this is the CD drawer.

7. Point out that you don't have a computer and what the hell is Windows?

Of course most of these are variants on being annoying. And why not?

Yes occasionally, my poor next door neighbour fell for it :(

I normally just leave the phone on the side, not responding to them. Or drag out the conversation, pretending I am completely useless with IT and unable to figure out how to turn the computer on etc to keep them on the line, if I am really bored ;D

This a fairly common scam. Doesn't matter what do not call list you get on, scammers do not abide by no call lists. As suggested, just put down the phone and walk away. Once they realize you are doing this, they will move to their next victim.

ha ha do what i do when they ring answer the phone and ask if they can hold for a minute theyll agree and even if they dont just do it anyway the set the phone down near a speaker and turn on a song of your choice it historically funny to put lilly allens f£*! you song on really loud then dance around to the song after about 1 min check to see if their gone it works a treat they soon stop calling lol its mean i know but hugely entertaining and who cares if its mean they dont care about you all they want is your hard earned cash so go for it

i heard about this on tv,,, no one would be dumb enough to fall for these calls,,, would they?

if they are,,, they need to learn a lesson (everyone has to learn somehow).

make sure if you are in teh states you get on the do not call list

https://www.donotcall.gov/

To save you a lot of headaches just get on a do not call list. There should be one for the country you live in you just have to find it.

I get it a lot, there is some kind of organization in the UK (I've forgotten the name) which you can sign up to and not receive spam calls like that.

Yes - fairly common. Nothing can be done about it as the calls are not from within the UK.

Yeah they are scam artists who want to con you out of some money.

This is getting unbelievably annoying now, every couple of days this foreign (Indian) women rings asking us to go on our computers due to a problem with Windows, now, I'm strong in the IT department so I wouldn't fall for this if I legless but it's getting pathetic now.

They always hide their number also so there's not much I can do.

Has anyone had this before?

Regrettably once your number is on the scammers / spammers lists there is no respite .. the list is passed, or more often, sold from one gang to another - they get paid by the number of potential 'victims' on the list so your number will never be removed ...

The only escape is to chnage your number - BT will do this 'for free' if you claim to be receiving abusive calls .. otherwise they will charge (unless you threaten to change your phone supplier to get a new number). Needless to say, always tick the maximum 'privacy' option when asked if you want to be in their 'directory' (i.e. 'no')

Once you have a new number, inform ONLY your friends and those VITAL companies - typically only your Bank - who may actually need to call you ...

ALL OTHER companies, and ESPECIALLY any 'on-line' get a PAYG mobile number from a SIMM you can buy down the 99p stores and put in a spare phone .... and which you can just throw away when the number of spam calls get too annoying ...

The KEY is NEVER EVER give out your 'land line' to any on-line company ...
