It depends on the type of business that you are trying to promote.
Examples" If your business is home owner focused, such as plumbing, heating, carpentry, or window cleaning, putting leaflets into home mail boxes is a reasonable way to advertise your business.
On the other hand, if the business is one that services only business operations, it makes little sense to put flyers into homes. Better to concentrate on your target customers, at their business premises.
If your business is a coffee shop, offer a flyer deal like this...........Buy five take away coffees, get the sixth one free. Buy a breakfast special meal and get the second one at half off. Buy a meal deal ticket at one price, get the second meal free. Free desert, with a meal.
Car wash. Half price on Mondays. Free wheel chrome polish. Free interior and window cloth wiper. Discount/free vacuum cleaner use with paid car wash. Buy 10 washes at regular price, get two free washes. Discount on interior shampoo, or detailing.
Use bright colour paper, and include as much contact information as possible. Phone number. website address, email, and address of business, and HOURS of service.
Be sure that the spelling is correct. Nothing looks worse than an ad with spelling errors.

You just got to search where may your future costumer may be at. example: I am a photographer and I do automotive photography so when I'm in college and i see an awesome car that maybe the owner would like to have some cool photographs of their car i left a flyer in their window.
I have always assumed that either they do work, or businesses at least believe that they work - because if that was not the case it would be total stupidity to keep on doing it.
I get loads advertising take away food and restuarants through my letterbox. Presumbly some of it works or they would have given up by now.
Sometimes, but depends on the product/area.
and what tips can be used to improve new customers for this mean of marketing?
