Huffington post uses ads, even individuals can buy remnant ad space through secondary brokers.
Of course there are online stores, membership sites that require payment, affiliate marketing (which may be what you called sponsors) is also big.

Personally, I'm an affiliate marketer. I either earn revenues by selling other peoples products and services, or, I can earn revenues through using Google Adsense display advertising. I'm also getting ready to venture into selling premium memberships on some of my websites. I also sell e-books and other e-products that I develop myself. I've been earning over 100k per year doing this for the past several years now.

Some big internet marketing forums are selling ads and posts and if you have good fund, you can go with that or make a site like that to start making money online

You can make money on a website by recommending relevant products to your website visitors.
you can look for a good affiliate program, go to their marketplace, look for a good product to promote and you can put a banner on your website in which when someone clicks the banner on your website and purchased the product you are promoting as an affiliate, you made a commission.
