You are asking a very broad question. What is it that you are trying to do well for? If it is a very competitive term, you may have quite a battle on your hands. There is more to ranking than just knowing the basics of SEO. You have to consider your competition. There are sites that are ranking for very high dollar terms, what is commonly referred to as money niches, or money keywords. Are going up against them? If there are a bunch of Google Adwords for keywords that you are trying to rank for, know that there is probably a huge amount of SEO comp for them as well, and unless you have deep pockets, you'll never rank for those. Before you go trying to take down sites with a PR5 and tons of backlinks, know your competition!
